THE BACKSEAT DRIVER
There was this one time I was heading to my place and I boarded a bus at around 6:30 pm. Well, I was not expecting to get to my place by 7 or 7:30 since it was a weekday and wow the jam in Nairobi in such days can be crazy. Given that the bus I had boarded was the one we call, 'za watu wazee', meaning for the elderly
, I was expecting to be at my place by 8pm maximum. Guess what, it was heading to 9pm and still the driver was comfortably following the fleet of vehicles that created the heavy traffic. Have you ever listened to the 7pm, 8pm and 9pm news in a bus on your way home from work? That day I did.
People were already acting out because other buses were overlapping and I remember that there was one that past us twice, to and fro. All sorts of comments were flying to the driver who did not care to reply. There were those who were like, "Don't you know how to drive a bus?"
Others, "You can alight and give the keys to someone who can show you how the overlapping is done."
It was not a sweet feeling and that day I got to my place at 10pm. A ride that was to be for about say 2hrs if it was so bad, took me almost twice the time.
So today I was listening to a song from 'This is not a test' album by Toby Mac and I remembered the experience. The song is backseat driver featuring Hollyn, which inspires our article today. Right now I can laugh about it but on that day, in that bus? Laughing about it could not cross my mind.
Been backseat my whole life
Now I turned 16 so it's time to drive
Buckle up, TRU behind the wheel
Got my iPhone bumping like (dom da dom)
GPS locked and the map was set
Thought I had it all right till the road went left
Spinning outta control in this Coupe de Ville
Now I'm sittin' shotgun, Jesus take the whee
Now I turned 16 so it's time to drive
Buckle up, TRU behind the wheel
Got my iPhone bumping like (dom da dom)
GPS locked and the map was set
Thought I had it all right till the road went left
Spinning outta control in this Coupe de Ville
Now I'm sittin' shotgun, Jesus take the whee
We get so caught up in wanting to take control of our lives and we forget that it takes more than us to live. We would not be even here or doing what we think we should be at a particular time, if God did not breath His breathe through our nostrils. We think we can help God make faster decisions. We want to take charge and yes God will allow us if we insist, until the day we will come to realize that all we will do is drive us astray.
I don't wanna be no backseat, (don't wanna be) no backseat driver
I don't wanna navigate, (don't wanna, uh), won't you take it over (take it over)
I don't wanna ever doubt you, I'm lost without you lord
I don't wanna be no backseat, (don't wanna be) no backseat driver
You got the wheel, take me where you wanna go
My heart is your's, no matter where we roll
I don't wanna navigate, (don't wanna, uh), won't you take it over (take it over)
I don't wanna ever doubt you, I'm lost without you lord
I don't wanna be no backseat, (don't wanna be) no backseat driver
You got the wheel, take me where you wanna go
My heart is your's, no matter where we roll
This is my prayer this year. That every time I think of doing something I should always remember to let Jesus take the wheel. That it will be in vain to go if it's not Him who is the driver of my heart.
See the heart of man is evil and deceitful. That's what the Bible says, but God is able to turn our hearts from hearts of stone to hearts of flesh that are able to adjust to God's leading.
