I ASKED TO SING

I asked to sing...
And trust me, my brain meant just that- to sing
And the child in me could only imagine the beauty of the art
So the One who makes the birds sing
Looked at me, smiled and said, "Bring"

Bring me your life, let me make a melody
Bring me your heart, soul and body
Bring me your dreams, and I mean fully
Bring me your wounds, however much ugly
And the child in me could only imagine the beauty of the art

So I said, "Lord I bring
All that I am and ever hope to be...I bring
All of my tears, doubts and fears
And most importantly my voice
And the One who makes the birds sing
Took my hand, said, "Come walk with the King"

And through vast lands we walked
Through deserts we were sun-baked
Through heavy rains we were drenched
Through beautiful days we danced
But my mind could not comprehend the swing...
I mean- did I not ask to sing?

Yet through vast lands you said...see
Through deserts you said...keep going
Through heavy rains you said...learn
Through beautiful days you said...breathe
Never once did you ask me to sing.

Now the growing child in me starts to see
There's more to singing than just singing
To sing is to let go
To sing is to love
To sing is to die to myself
To sing is to soar on grace
To sing is to walk with Him-
The One who makes the birds sing
Only when to Him my life sings
Will my voice so beautifully sing.
Lord, let my life sing
