THE COURAGE TO BECOME

When adulthood finally dawned on me, I did not know how to respond. At least not at first.

You see with growing up there are expectations; you need to get your life together, find out which career path you should take if you haven't yet, understand yourself, find love, and build a home. But then, there is this war within. The war between what they expect from me and who I feel I really am.

So I'm sitting here listening to this song Courage by P!nk on playback:

I'm walking uphill, both ways it hurts
I bury my heart here in this dirt
I hope it's a seed, I hope it works

I need to grow, here I could be
Closer to light, closer to me
Don't have to do this perfectly, yeah

Rain, it pours, rain, it pours
It's pouring on me
The rain it falls, rain it falls
Sowing the seeds of love and hope, love and hope
We don't have to stay, stuck in the way

In the chorus, the singer asks if she really has the courage to change, and I find myself asking myself the question, if I have the courage to become.

To become that adult who got it all together (if they even exist), to stand for what I believe fearlessly, to follow up on projects I began when I was still a dreamy human, to love hard and build big.

You see its one thing to dream and a whole other thing to actualize.

Now I realize that I have a lot of redefining to do.

Who am I? What's my purpose? What do I stand for? Why do I do what I do? Have I the courage to become and introduce myself?

As much as it is great to have goals and dreams and go after them, we all need the courage to accept ourselves, step up, and become who we are on the inside. As I realize now, maturity is not about jobs and careers and living the society's definition of success; it is stepping out in courage to become who we already are on the inside.

Saying yes because the renewed inner man says yes, building out of conviction and living from a sense of inner peace, no matter how insane it looks to the outside world.

No, we do not have to do it perfectly- at least not the world's definition of perfect. We do not have to get stuck in the way. We only have to wake up in the morning, listen to the spirit, plan, and follow-through. When the hills are steeper, we remember the bigger picture and above all remember that as long as we follow the rhythm of peace, whatever follows we can handle.
